By Liz Phillips for MailOnline Updated: In times like these, some savers may want to bail out of the stock market and take shelter in cash until the market steadies. But those with a stocks and shares Isa may not be allowed to do that if they want to keep their money within a tax-efficient Isa.

Even though tax rules state that you can sell a fund within an Isa and leave the money in cash while deciding where to reinvest it, not all fund supermarkets offer you this option.

These supermarkets allow you to keep all your Isas under one roof and trade them easily - most also allow you to hold money in cash. But one of the largest, Fidelity FundsNetwork, allows you only to switch from one investment to another.

You could go into corporate bond funds to hide from equities or phase your money in over six months.

With phasing, you put the full Isa allowance into a stocks and shares Isa by drip-feeding the money into funds over the following months. But this is no use if you want to sell up and wait for the market to settle.

And once you take money out of the Isa wrapper it becomes taxable and you can't replace it. Many investors have made this mistake. Darius McDermott, of independent financial adviser IFA Chelsea Financial Services, says: Chelsea uses Co-funds supermarket, which is available only through IFAs.
