Mats, gear crafting in particular , and furniture are great starts. That's how I got started and was pulling in k a week early on. I funded houses, and crafting, and now make a lot more, but it's a great start.

Focus on the most consistent ones. The less investment required on your part, the better. Level up crafters and gatherers, study the market and do this. You'll have several millions of gil in no time. Here's another guide that may help.

Check prices on everything before NPCing stuff. I regularly sell things that are only worth g, and while it may seem like chump change, it adds up, and the items usually sell quickly. Take up Gathering, if not Crafting as well. Spiritbond and sell materia.

Find items that are available at vendors that people buy because they're lazy Tallow Candles, Fish Glue, beast tribe vendors. Lots of different methods, find what works for you. Best I have ever gotten was the Ifrit head wall lamp.

If you build up your crafts you can craft something every 2 minutes or so for k profit each and just wait for them to sell. Level gatherers, watch prices on market boards of things you can gather, stay competitive with your pricing but don't undercut by huge amounts to sell items faster. Keep the markets healthy and you will have no trouble making Gil. As long as you make profits, undercutting by high amounts to sell faster is perfectly fine. The MB on this game is slow as it is. If the item is selling at a healthy rate no need to undercut by large margins.

However if the item is selling slowly then undercutting by larger margins is okay as players likely don't want to pay the high prices for that item.

Either way don't want to undercut drastically and destroy the market for that item. A healthy market is one with competition, not one where you are raking the gil because there isn't.
