BURKE, SD — Burke Livestock Auction celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. Herris Lambley and family commemorated their ownership of the auction by serving a free lunch to around customers and friends. The lunch included roast beef, pork sandwiches and homemade ice cream. They also had door prizes and drawings throughout the day. We had over 2, cattle. Burke Livestock Auction Company held its opening sale Tuesday, Aug. The company started from the efforts of stockholders in the immediate Burke area.

A corporation was formed with the directors being Harvey Willoughby, Wm. Horstman, Otto Nachtigal, Dewey Klein, Orville Stinton and Werner Wischmann. Kenneth Leland was selected as manager. Clifford Van Houten of Bloomfield, NE was hired as auctioneer. He had handled sales at Yankton, SD and Valentine, NE.

The result of their endeavor was the most modern sales ring that was constructed in South Dakota. Orville Stinton was the construction manager of the layout.

The cattle yards were designed from the recommendations of several members of the board of directors upon inspection of top-ranking sales rings in the area. The enterprise mushroomed into one of the biggest sale barns in South Dakota and ranked 23rd in volume out of the 52 barns in the state.

More than 8, cattle had moved through the barn. The entire consignment was bought by a western buyer and shipped to Las Vegas. Arthur Haines bought in with Young but in , Haines sold his interests to Wilbur Jones. Young later purchased the interest of Jones and became full owner again. In December of , Cecil Peterson took over as manager for Young until It was during this time that major improvements and remodeling of the pavilion greatly enhanced the appearance of the entire establishment.

In , the company reverted back to Young who managed the company until it was purchased by Herris Lambley. The company has remained a family oriented business ever since. Today, whenever the barn holds a special or large sale, they can have up to 65 employees. Jerry Vogeler, lobbiest for the South Dakota Livestock Auction Market Association, was on hand for the 40th anniversary sale.
